Will the Warhammer Online RvR consequences be meaningful and significant? To me RvR is the key to Warhammer Online’s success. I have been reading two fascinating articles comparing Wow to Warhammer Online.
Tobold from Tolbold’s MMORPG Blog has responded to an earlier post by Keen and Graev’s Gaming Blog. Like Keen and Graev argue that what will make WAR standout from World of Warcraft is the Warhammer Online RvR consequences. To be specific, unlike WoW, Warhammer will have consequences.
Tobold argues that even if there are consequences to RvR, that the mechanics will not be successful because players will only engage in Warhammer RvR for their own advantage. Meaning, that players will not fight simply to promote their Warhammer Army, but instead just to promote themselves.
Well here are my thought. There must be RvR consequences if Warhammer Online is going to be successful. I am not totally convinced yet that Warhammer has built in enough benefits for players who succeed in RvR battles. I think that it would be awesome if winning armies received experience boosts for claiming victory points. Or, Warhammer Online could provide winning armies with increased rare harvest items or some other financial reward. This would be a great way to build in personal incentives for RvR battles.
So I guess that I agree and disagree with both Keen and Graev and Tobold. I do have high hopes for Warhammer’s RvR system. I do think that it will set WAR apart from WoW. However, I agree with Tobold that PvP systems tend to lack personal benefits that disincentivize players from helping out their Army. I certainly hope that there will be RvR consequences in Warhammer Online.

Quite interesting! I hope there will be a good balance of personal rewards, faction rewards, and penalties in WAR’s new RvR system. I’ll expand upon this in my own article and reference your site.
The best gear in the entire game comes from the PvP at the very end: City Sieges. In order to get there your realm must have worked together to control all the prior tiers. That’s incentive to me.
Also, if your realm controls the region it will give you the PvE areas. It’s been said in the podcasts that the fastest way to level is a combination of PvE/PvP (Although you can level exclusively in both).
And one more also. DAOC had relics which offered incredible benefits to the entire realm that captured them from the enemy. No individual is capable of obtaining them. If WAR takes another page from DAOC we can expect larger realm wide incentives that are far greater than any disincentive players might feel comes from working together together.
Thanks Snafzg. I would love the link!
I hope you are right Keen. I have been looking forward to meaningful PvP for a long time.
The best PvP that I have found so far is EQ2. But, it is not really the combat that makes it good. Instead, it is the way PvP affects the economy. Lower tier weapons and armor are worth something because of the level locked pvp. Unfortunately, there are not enough rewards for PvP in EQ2. However, there is great gear. But, it is too hard to get to make it really worth while.
I personally think that increased rare harvested items or xp bonuses would be great.

Hello,
Much like everyone else, I’m impatiently awaiting Warhammer Online, and I’ve found your site to be updated with quality WAR info. I’m also the webmaster of http://www.GamerTales.com, a site containing a collection of video gaming stories, guides, and tales of adventure. Since your blog is of quality, I decided to display your RSS feed in our Warhammer Online blog section, and would really appreciate a reciprocal link somewhere on your site. Anyhow, if you know of any other entertaining or informative WAR gaming blogs, please let me know.
Keep up the good work, and thanks.

This game looks promising as you can see from the videos. Hopefully it will have better endgame than wow did.
